Beyond the budget: why people are your most powerful brand
In an age of AI-generated content, the most valuable asset may be a real human voice.

In the relentless, rapidly changing landscape of the modern workplace, keeping pace can often feel like an impossible task. In larger organisations within the technology sector there seems to be a temptation to throw large sums of money at employer branding, hoping that a polished, high-budget campaign will attract the best talent. Yet, I have often found that the most profound resonance comes from authenticity. When you have little to no budget, you are forced to be creative.
At Cloudera, navigating a change of mission required us to pause and reflect on our foundational goals. Our people, without question, have always been our most valuable asset. In talent branding, it is essential that we keep our people at the very heart of everything we do. Operating on a small budget is undoubtedly a challenge, but it is one we have wholeheartedly embraced. A lack of financial resources acts as a brilliant catalyst; it forces us to think beyond conventional boundaries and colour outside the lines. It keeps the fire in our bellies and demands a level of ingenuity that simply cannot be bought.
This ingenuity naturally intersects with the rise of artificial intelligence. In an era where AI is everywhere, finding the sweet spot between embracing new technology and preserving human connection is vital. We view this through a very specific lens: artificial intelligence is for process, whilst our people represent our authenticity through visual story telling. We leverage AI to fine-tune our operations, allowing it to act as an exceptional, time-saving partner. However, we do not use it to generate our core ideas or to create our corporate culture. The true voice of our organisation cannot be synthetically produced; it must be lived and breathed. Our story must be told by us.
That authentic voice is amplified most powerfully by the individuals who know us best. Instead of spending on glossy advertisements, we invest our energy into empowering our people. When our current employees and our former colleagues share their genuine experiences, the impact far outweighs any traditional marketing effort. They are the true brand ambassadors, telling their story with warmth and sincerity. This is what resonates deeply with prospective talent.
Maintaining this discipline requires a relentless dedication to the human element. It is about understanding that a compelling employer brand is not a line item on a spreadsheet, but a living ecosystem built on trust, transparency, and shared purpose.
To find ourselves recently shortlisted for several awards is humbling. It serves as a gentle reminder that even in an age dominated by rapid technological advancement, putting people first remains the most powerful strategy of all. It proves that by championing creativity and investing in your people’s growth, you can build an authentic brand, through organic efforts.
