NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF ESTONIA PARTNERSHIP PRESERVES DIGITAL CONTENT
The National Archives of Estonia has partnered with global content preservation and migration services provider Memnom to preserve heritage video content.
Memnon has assisted the National Archives of Estonia (NAE) with its first large-scale videotape digitisation. The EU-funded project aims to digitise NAE video tapes before degradation beyond repair.
Magnetic videotape degrades faster than film, and the equipment needed to play it is becoming scarce, leaving a narrowing window for digitisation.
The partnership focuses on digitising up to 1,200 magnetic video tapes containing 4,300 hours of Estonian heritage. The project will be completed within a strict eight-month schedule and is the first time NAE has outsourced its preservation outside of Estonia. The digitised content is now publicly accessible online.
