Social media monitoring might benefit companies, but individuals should beware of the roving eye of their employers.

Take this cautionary tale of how to commit career suicide in 140 characters or less. Earlier this month, Twitter user ‘Theconner’ sent out this tweet after a job interview with Cisco systems: "Cisco just offered me a job! Now I have to weigh the utility of a fatty paycheck against the daily commute to San Jose and hating the work."

Moments later, Theconner got a tweet back from someone monitoring tweet traffic at Cisco. Timmylevad posted:

"Who is the hiring manager. I'm sure they would love to know that you will hate the work. we here at Cisco are versed in the web."

The story has become a viral sensation with the nickname "Cisco fatty." It’s not known whether Theconner managed to salvage his or her job.
