OBAMA BEATS ROMNEY...AT TWITTER
If Barack Obama’s two presidential campaigns have done anything well, it is connect with the youth vote. This time around, the president is winning the social media battle against challenger Mitt Romney, chiefly through the former’s use of Twitter.
In a Havas Media survey of Twitter use, Obama held a 16% advantage over Romney. Obama scores higher in terms of community development and inspiring voters. During the third and final debate, there were 105,767 tweets per minute mentioning Obama’s ‘horses and bayonets’ comment and a total of around 6.5 million.
Twitter, according to the Washington Post, has a huge impact not only on the 4% of voters who get their campaign news from the site but on the hundreds of reporters who consistently follow the candidates’ feeds. Twitter has become a means of shaping the ideas of the media during the campaign. However, the Havas report indicated that neither candidate has successfully shaped the average voters’ opinions via Twitter.
Funnily enough, Obama also wins at Pinterest, though Michelle Obama cannot keep up with Ann Romney’s audience engagement via the visual pinboard. Ann Romney’s pins are typically her own images or recipes. But, the first lady’s followers have grown by 1,730 since the first debate at the beginning of October, stunting her counterpart’s follower expansion.
In other news, nearly nobody ‘likes’ Vice President Joe Biden. By contrast, Paul Ryan has five million Facebook followers.
