THE FUTURE OF WOMEN IN THE WORKPLACE
Two months ago, thefuturestory began to approach the issues that will affect the communications industry in the coming years with an event at London’s RADA. This week, the story that was told was one of gender equality in the digital workplace.
Theblueballroom’s ‘Wiring the Workplace for Women’ workshop, led by Christina Fee, founder of Women at Work, engaged an intimate group in debate on the issues, delving into the disadvantages women face in the workplace, what businesses must do and how women can achieve their career goals.
Sheila Parry, theblueballroom’s MD, says of thefuturestory, “The landscape for business shifts every day. Creating a path through this minefield of change, guiding hundreds if not thousands of people behind a vision, forecasting and reforecasting changing customer needs, establishing a voice in a crowded media landscape, maintaining a focus on delivery and yet planning for a challenging future.”
One of the key areas of discussion was the fear on the part of organisations of women “disappearing and having babies.” The group concluded that education was needed to inform the industry of the value women can bring to an organisation and a workplace, regardless of the longstanding stereotypes and cliched views of women.
