DIGITAL DAY DESIGNED TO BRIDGE THE UK’S SKILLS GAP

BIMA, the UK’s digital and tech trade body, has launched the tenth annual Digital Day, taking place today, 10 November, in schools across the UK. The event brings digital and tech companies together with students to help them tackle real challenges, after 95% of BIMA members stated a lack of skills was holding back their growth.

Digital continues to grow at an exponential rate and education must follow suit to ensure young people have the skills to embark on a digital career. Coinciding with COP26, this year’s Digital Day will focus on addressing environmental issues and the UK’s digital skills shortage.

The event is sponsored by innovation leaders EPAM Systems and supported by WWF, who have worked to provide climate-related challenges for the students, who will work with leading tech businesses in the local area to establish digitally focused solutions.

Entries will be submitted to a panel of industry experts by 6 December. Winning schools will receive a cash prize alongside the chance to take part in workshops with leading brands and digital experts to gain real experience.

In 2019, BIMA found that over 80% of young people who learnt about digital careers during the event were inspired to find out more. Over 10,000 young people between the age of 13 and 16 took part in Digital Day last year, with more than 150 schools signed up to participate in 2021.

Matt Larsen-Daw, education manager at WWF, says, “There has never been a more critical time for our planet, and we’ve seen millions of people up and down the UK demanding action on climate change and asking what they can do to help. The need for change brings opportunities for innovation, and by equipping young people to understand and create technological and digital solutions we can help them drive - and thrive in - a sustainable future.”
