INDEX LAUNCHED TO TRACK CORPORATE RESPONSES TO UKRAINE CRISIS
Non-profit civic start-up organisation, the Good Lobby, and Progressive Shopper, a political contributions tracker, have launched the Ukraine Corporate Index to help stakeholders track corporate responses to the crisis in Ukraine.
The Ukraine Corporate Index aligns with the Good Lobby’s wider aim to equalise access to power and create a more plural, inclusive, and democratic society in the EU. The Ukraine Corporate Index works to inform investors, customers, and citizens about how companies and brands are positioning themselves in the ongoing conflict.
The index was built on the belief that the fastest way to end the war is to cease trading with Russia, disinvest Russian assets and refuse finance to Putin’s government. “After professing the virtues of environmental, social and governance factors (ESG), most companies don’t seem to walk the walk when it comes to the ongoing social and governance violations committed by such an invasion. Investors, customers, and citizens deserve to know on which side of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict their companies and brands stand for”, says Alberto Alemanno, founder of The Good Lobby and professor of law at HEC Paris.
Progressive Shopper provides current data on the political contributions from popular brands with the aim to empower consumers to shop with companies that align with their values. Likewise, the Ukraine Corporate Tracker aims to inform stakeholders and encourage them to assess their investment and shopping decisions.
The tracker will update regularly and currently lists more 70 companies, with plans to expand its reach. It includes the company and its listed brands, a colour-coded score and the actions that have been taken.
Mark Hanis, founder of Progressive Shopper, says, “the private sector cannot stay on the sidelines of this crisis and must take a stand against Russia. Consumers expect CEOs to show the same leadership as most political leaders and will judge them accordingly. As long as Putin is invading Ukraine, these companies should leave Russia.”
