BEST IN CORPORATE VIDEO CELEBRATED AT EVCOM SCREEN AWARDS

In past years, the EVCOM Screen Awards have been announced at formal dinners in grand halls across London. This year, in a change of pace that breathed new life into the programme, the event was held at London’s BAFTA, the spiritual home of British film. The club’s theatre provided a comfortable setting from which to view the year’s best corporate videos in the UK.

Winning videos were played following the announcement of their gold awards. Many of this year’s crop of success stories stemmed from the third sector or public sector, including the Platinum Awards winner by Affixxius Films, ‘Kayleigh’s Love Story’ for the Leicestershire Police. That film also won a gold in the ‘Content for social media’ category. The harrowing film documents the true story of Kayleigh Haywood, who was murdered after meeting a sexual predator online. It has notched 3m views on YouTube since 3 January.

Another winning project, one that took home two gold awards, one in the ‘Health and safety’ category and one in the ‘Drama’ category, documented the danger of homemade explosives. The film by Zince Media was created for the Centre for Protection of the National Infrastructure. ‘Smoking Kids’ by Pretzel and Peggy for Public Health England won the Laurus Award for its comedic, yet poignant approach to tackling the health hazards of cigarettes. ‘Control,’ a gorgeous film by RAW productions for the Northumberland Domestic Abuse Services won the ‘Charity and not for profit’ sector gold award. It used dance and music to address domestic abuse in a unique and impactful way.

But the awards also recognised excellence in technical filmmaking. The corporate video industry has long been at the forefront of new technologies and this year, winners represented the best in class in terms of use of technology, creative filmmaking and editing and effects. ‘Cricket has landed 3’ by Affixxius Films for Trent Bridge won the ‘VFX and motion graphics’ category for its fantastical, dramatic film mixing computer animation and live action. Apartments.com and A-Vision took home the gold in ‘Screen innovation’ for its graphically complex and immersive launch video for Aparments.com. The judges also lauded other films, like ‘Tusk Time for Change’ by Embolden and the Tusk Trust, for their ability to push the boundaries of corporate film and use technology to create the best possible work.

Jenny Jenkins was formally introduced as the newly-minted chief executive of EVCOM. Jenkins inherited the mantle of leadership from Steve Garvey, who has overseen EVCOM since 2015, shortly after the merger between the IVCA and Eventia. Jenkins was managing director of MCI Group for the past 15 years before leaving the agency in January.

The next EVCOM Awards will be the Clarions, due to be announced at a ceremony on 14 July at the Seven Dials Club in Covent Garden. Winners from all three awards programmes (the third being the EVCOM Live Awards) will be automatically entered into the EVCOM Industry Awards, which will celebrate excellence in film and live events.
